Managing Director

I started Balance in 2010 after many years working for Barclays & HSBC in senior roles, to help businesses cope with the tough times that lay ahead. 9 years later we have helped to access of £300m of approved funding for our ever expanding client base. My team and I are more than just a finance partner to our clients, aiming to be trusted advisors/critical friends and love working with them to source innovative funding solutions, whilst helping to manoeuvre the “minefield” of complicated process.

 

I try to “keep it simple” for the benefit of all parties in every deal and because we understand the pitfalls of funding, we can plan a clear route for all to follow.

 

Away from work, I have a busy family life as an adopted Devonian in my home city of Plymouth and my love of sport has led me to a successful 10 year managerial career in local youth football. From 2019, I am part of the management team for Torpoint FC men’s team and am looking forward to a taking a group of talented young players into the local semi- professional game and beyond.

 

In both my work and personal life, I believe in the mantra “Facta Non Verba” – Deeds not Words 😊

Paul Newman

Commercial Manager

I joined Balance for Business in 2013 after a 33 year career with HSBC/Midland Bank. My role as a Commercial Banking Relationship Manager with HSBC enabled me to assist small to medium sized business in the Central London and Essex areas. Having moved to Devon in 2009 (to get married) I first met, and worked with, Dave Ottley when I transferred to HSBC’s Commercial Centre in Derriford, Plymouth. I then took the opportunity to follow Dave to Balance to support him with his growing business.

 

My role as Commercial Manager within Balance involves building relationships with our clients, and liaising between them and the banks to ensure that they receive a good service and that their funding requirements are progressed to a satisfactory and timely conclusion.

 

Outside of work I enjoy travelling, which has taken me to destinations such as Russia, Iceland and Alaska over the past 10 years. I am also the proud owner of a Torquay United season ticket, so I enjoy my pilgrimages to Plainmoor every week/fortnight.

Mandy Goord

Lending Support Assistant

I joined the team at Balance almost 5 years ago following a career break to bring up my two children. Previous to this, I had a ten year career in retail management both in London and Plymouth where I also held Area Management roles, responsible for the trading performance of a number of large stores in the South West.

 

My role with Balance for business as a lending support officer involves taking our clients through the lending process from application to completion, endeavouring to provide the highest level of customer service to ensure a smooth and ‘hassle free’ experience.

 

My time outside of the office is extremely busy, mainly taken up with my children and spending time with friends and family. Having two teenagers in the house means I am often on taxi duty to their various hobbies and social events! I also have a very energetic and mischievous springer spaniel who is a water and mud magnet!

Business Development Manager

Peter has been in Financial Services for the last 28 years. He has worked throughout the United Kingdom and Europe as well as many parts of the world, Africa, India and more recently Middle East.

 

He has a holistic approach to advising clients the most appropriate way to fund their business and has a multitude of skills commensurate with his experience to advise his clients on all aspects funding. Living between Truro and Falmouth his outside interests are sailing, enjoys rugby and especially restoring sports cars.
